5 Things to Know Today, Feb. 19, In Montgomery County

1. Presidents Day Holiday: The county government and public schools are closed today. Check this list of closings before you head out today. Also, for those with county provided trash and recycling service, collections slide by one day this week.

2. Appliance Savings: Maryland is not collecting sales tax today on the purchase of qualifying Energy Star appliances.

3. Savor Bethesda: The annual restaurant week organized by the Bethesda Urban Partnership continues through Sunday, Feb. 25. Learn more.

4. Calling Creative High School Students: Two contests are currently open to high school students. The Gaithersburg Book Festival is accepting submissions to their poetry contest through Thursday, February 22. Create a public service announcement and submit it by February 29 to promote pedestrian safety for the “Heads Up, Phones Down” video contest.
