One hundred Briggs Chaney Middle School students were published in the “Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans.” Sixteen were chosen to share their original poems during the school’s annual Literacy Day celebration, held in honor of National Poetry Month.
“In 2005, I had the concept of celebrating the literacy accomplishments of our students at Briggs Chaney Middle School,” said Dr. Jenise Leach, English and reading literacy teacher. “This year marks the 20th year.”
The anthology is a national publication that highlights student writing from kindergarten through 12th grade.
“We had 100 students get published, which is a record number for us,” said Leach.
Sixteen students presented their original poems alongside a slideshow during the event.
A selection of the featured poems is included below:
- Cure for Cancer by Ruth De Jesus, 6th Grade
- Going Through Anxiety by Valentina Portillo-Vasquez, 6th Grade
