Juneteenth Celebrations to Take Place Across Montgomery County

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks the day the enslaved persons of Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, almost two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, it is a celebration of Black heritage, resilience and culture in the United States.

Celebrate Juneteenth next week wherever you are in Montgomery County with these upcoming events:

Kensington Juneteenth Celebration: Saturday, June 14 from 12 to 4 p.m.

📍St. Paul Park, Kensington, MD

Festivities include live music from local bands such as DuPont Brass and Proverbs Reggae, art exhibitions and a food drive.

4th Annual Juneteenth Black Business Expo: Sunday, June 15, from 2 to 8 p.m.

📍Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring, MD

Featuring Black-owned businesses from around the Montgomery County area, the Expo is open to the public, and vendors interested in a table can register here.

Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival: Sunday, June 15 to Thursday, June 19

Missing History: Rockville’s Middle Lane Community: Wednesday, June 18, from 12 to 1 p.m.

📍 Red Brick Courthouse, Rockville, MD

Enjoy a short presentation followed by a walking tour and learn about the hidden history about this community established by freedmen of the 1860’s.

Juneteenth at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park: Thursday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

📍Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, Sandy Spring, MD

The Park’s museum will be open for guests ($4 seniors and children (ages 6-17)/$5 adults), and guests are able to take the Underground Railroad Experience Trail self-guided tours

Special Opening, Juneteenth at Josiah Henson Museum and Park: Thursday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

📍Josiah Henson Museum and Park, North Bethesda, MD

Celebrate Juneteenth by learning about Rev. Josiah Henderson, who freed over 100 enslaved people via the Underground Railroad. Tickets are $4 for seniors and children (ages 6-17) and $5 for adults.

Pushing Back — The Fight for Freedom Is Not Over: Saturday, June 21, 12 to 10 p.m.

📍Blackrock Center for the Arts, Germantown, MD

An action-packed celebration featuring all-day live music, workshops, an artisan market and a screening of new documentary Resilience Has a Face. Free Ride-On shuttle service 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Northwest High School and Montgomery College Germantown Campus.
