Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks the day the enslaved persons of Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, almost two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, it is a celebration of Black heritage, resilience and culture in the United States.
