On Tuesday, County Councilmembers plan to introduce a bill to increase the tax credit for improvements to property at childcare or daycare services. The goal hopes to give parents of young children more childcare options and shorten wait list times,
The current $3,000 property tax credit, established in 1988, will rise to a maximum of $10,000 under the proposed bill, according to Council President Kate Stewart, who will introduce the bill.
“Montgomery County is facing a childcare crisis, which reflects a broader statewide trend,” Stewart said Monday during a press briefing.
Maryland has lost 15.5% of licensed providers and more than 1,000 home-based providers “in recent years,” she noted.
Currently, large family childcare facilities handling from 9 to 12 children are exempt from the property tax credit. Under the proposed legislation, these groups would become eligible.
Other eligible groups include registered family childcare home providers, licensed childcare centers, licensed day care centers for adults and licensed day care centers for the elderly.
A public hearing on the bill is set for July 8.
