African Roots and Culture Event Features Food, Fashion and Tradition

The Ethio-American Chamber of Commerce invites the community to immerse themselves in tradition at their African Roots and Cultures Event. The festival will take place on June 22 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center.

The festival will honor African heritage through numerous activities, including opportunities to watch music and dance performances, a children’s corner with educational games and a showcase of traditional fashions.

The event will also provide visitors with the opportunity to learn about and taste a variety of African cuisines. The festival will feature cooking demonstrations from chefs, free samples of food and coffee and vendors selling dishes from Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa and many other countries.

“The purpose and the goal of this event is promoting the culture and connecting people through culture,” said Selamawit Tefera, board member and head of events for the Ethio-American Chamber of Commerce. “We as a continent have many more stories to be told to the globe.”

In addition to spotlighting their traditions, the Chamber of Commerce hopes to introduce patrons to members of the African business community. The festival will feature a marketplace with over 25 vendors who will not only sell their items but speak about their career journeys and share the stories behind their products.

The African Roots and Culture Event is free and open to all ages. More information about the event can be found on the organizer’s website.
