Independent Bookstores in MOCO

What’s better than strolling through a cute and cozy bookstore? Especially in the summer, when Marylanders look for ways to escape the heat and humidity. Now is a great time to explore independent bookstores within Montgomery County!

Here’s a list of some of Montgomery County’s independent bookstores:

 

Bergstrom Press & Books – Kensington
Bergstrom Press & Books is located in the historic district of Kensi
ngton. They specialize in Russian and other East-Central European Languages. They cater to those wanting to learn, university students, as well as anyone looking for books on these topics.

 

Bonjour Books – Kensington
Just across the street sits Bonjour Books, just off to the right of the antique market. They sell primarily French books. This includes books for people looking to learn French as well as native speakers. They also have an array of French cultural books with historical significance for the Parisian in your life!

 

Friends of the Library Bookstore – Rockville
Friends of the Library is a great place where you can donate your books and find new ones. They also sell a variety of antique prints, pins, magazine
s, and art. They are also a registered non-profit organization dedicated to benefiting Montgomery County libraries, educators, and schools. 

 

HouseMouse Books & Vintage – Takoma Park

Kensington Row Bookshop – Kensington
Just down the street from Bonjour Books, you can find Kensington Row Bookshop. This bookstore has a w
ide selection of books on two levels. It’s a quiet and cozy shop where you can buy books, journals, collectables, or other gifts. They have an adorable kids’ section on the second level, which sits across from the Catalan Library and Reading Room. The store also hosts a variety of book clubs on different topics. Two of their current book clubs are focused on History and Pop Culture. On occasion, they also bring in local authors to speak!

 

 

Mojomala Books Records & CoolStuff- Silver Spring
Mojomala is a boutique store in Silver Spring. They sell a variety of new and second-hand books, comics, and records of all genres. The shelves are stacked high with their many sections. They also have an online store!

 

 

People’s Book – Takoma Park
Just down the street and around the corner from HouseMouse, you can find People’s Book. The store is adorable and possesses a nice collection of books, stickers, other cute items, and a large collection of thought provoking zines! The store is organized into easy to follow sections of different kinds of books.

Second Story Books – Rockville
Second Story Books has a substantial collection of second-hand books on pretty much any topic you can think of, as well as vintage art prints, journals, comics, and other second-hand items at great prices. They also have a location in DC. The Rockville collection is huge, with many aisles to browse through. You could easily spend hours here!

 

Wonderland Books – Bethesda
In the heart of Bethesda, Wonderland Books has a whimsical atmosphere similar to its name. They sell a variety of books, notebooks, stationery items, and candles. The bookstore opened its doors in 2024 and hosts a variety of events, including author talks and other themed events!
