Surveys for Initial High School Boundary Options Close July 21

On Monday, July 21, 2025, surveys will close for the boundary options for two future Montgomery County high schools.

The two surveys cover the reopening of Charles W. Woodward High School and opening of newly built Crown High School in Gaithersburg. Zoning boundaries determine “school clusters”, indicating which middle and elementary schools will feed into the new high schools. Newly drawn boundaries may change high school zones for future students not attending Woodward or Crown.

Woodward High School currently serves as the annex location of Northwood High School as it undergoes construction. Construction will complete in summer of 2026 with an updated design including 2 additional floors of classrooms.

Additionally, construction on Damascus High School will expand its student capacity. However, due to fiscal constraints, the construction project has yet to begin. It’s completion date  stands at “to be determined”, per the MCPS Capital Improvements Program/Master Plan.

Woodward High School will serve areas of Wheaton, Garrett Park, Kensington, and Bethesda. As such, potential boundary options cover areas currently served by Walter Johnson High School, Wheaton High School, Albert Einstein High School and John F. Kennedy High School. Students not attending Woodward may also be directed to different high schools in order to even out school populations. For instance, with the population capacity of Northwood High School set to expand, multiple options will increase the area Northwood serves.

Crown High School will serve Gaithersburg. Potential boundary options cover areas currently served by Quince Orchard High School, Gaithersburg High School, Watkins Mill High School, Richard Montgomery High School, Seneca Valley High School and Northwest High School. With the planned expansion of Damascus High School, multiple options also expand its boundary.

Each survey presents four different boundary options. MCPS encourages residents to respond. More information on the survey is located on the boundary study webpage alongside an overview of options and recordings of information sessions.
