Summer Staycation in the County

The summer is more than halfway over, but there is still time left to explore and experience new adventures. While thousands of county residents may head to their favorite beach or other destination, lots of other people will stay home this summer.

Studies about summer travel are mixed. One Bankrate survey conducted last spring found only 46% of U.S. adults planned to travel this summer. That is down from 53% in 2024.

The study found vacation costs and the uncertain economy are the major factors for why people are choosing to stay home.

County Offers Plenty to See and Do

Staycations are often popular. Montgomery County has a number of attractions, restaurants, and fun activities to keep families entertained.

“Sometimes the best summer experiences are right in your backyard. In Montgomery County, you get a mix of everything—rural trails and city streets, quiet vineyards and lively downtowns. It’s a chance to explore something new without going far,” said Aynae Simmons, Communications Coordinator for Visit Montgomery, the county’s main tourism office.

“Montgomery County is one of the most diverse regions in the country, with over 150 languages spoken throughout our communities, but it’s also diverse in experiences. We’re home to three national parks along with heritage sites that feature American history. You can hike Sugarloaf Mountain, paddle by cascading waterfalls at Great Falls or just take in the sights at the Overlook, and dine your way around the world, all in one day,” Simmons added.

Here is a sampling of some activities for people to enjoy this summer:
