It’s Tuesday, Aug. 26, and here are five things to know in Montgomery County. Check the weather forecast here.
1. First Day of School: Today is the official first day of school for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Monday was the school system’s first-ever Transition Day for kindergartners, sixth and ninth graders, and students attending a new school for the first time.
2. School Bus Rules of the Road for Drivers: With the new school year starting, drivers will encounter school buses during their commutes or regular driving hours. Here are some rules of the road to remember as school gets back in session.
3. Biking to School: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service reminds students who bike to school that helmets are necessary.

⚠️What does a helmet do? During a fall or collision much of the impact is absorbed by the helmet rather than your head & brain. Bike helmets make sense. #kids pic.twitter.com/L3dYwewIwR

4. ‘Refrigerator Curriculum’ Includes Form To Opt Out of Class: Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that allows parents to let their children opt out of class when it conflicts with their religious beliefs, MCPS created a form for parents to do so.
5. Pools: All Montgomery County Recreation outdoor pools will be closed this week through Friday. Pools will reopen during Labor Day weekend before the county’s outdoor pool season ends.
HEADS UP: All #MoCoRec's outdoor pools will be closed Aug. 25–29 this week before reopening for the final splash of the summer during Labor Day weekend. Join us one last time before our outdoor pool season ends on Sept. 1! 🏊♂️
