Rockville Councilmember Shaw Announces Campaign for County Council

Rockville City Councilmember Izola Shaw announced she is running for Montgomery Council in District 3. That seat including Rockville and Gaithersburg currently is held by Councilmember Sidney Katz. Katz cannot run for reelection due to term limits.

Shaw, who was elected to Rockville City Council in 2023, is a strong advocate for rent stabilization in Rockville. She also has campaigned for a $15 minimum wage.

“It is unacceptable that most families in this County struggle with affordability, from skyrocketing housing costs, rising grocery prices, to a lack of access to childcare—leading to growing financial instability. It is unconscionable that ICE raids terrorize our neighborhoods, targeting vulnerable immigrant communities,” Shaw said in a news release announcing her candidacy on Tuesday.

“This campaign is rooted in the power of our community and our shared responsibility to protect and uplift one another—a responsibility that calls on all of us to step up in this moment.” Shaw said, “I’m running because we must fight for a future where every voice is valued and every family has a real chance to thrive.”

On her campaign website, she states she wants to make Montgomery County more affordable, safer and with reliable transit.

Shaw previously worked at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
