1. Kilmar Abrego Garcia: Sens. Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen made statements after Kilmar Abrego Garcia was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Monday.
2. Class is Back in Session: Tuesday was the first day of school for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). There are new rules this school year, including changes to grading policy, cell phone policy, and student code of conduct. There is also an opt-out option for LGBTQ+ books in school curriculum, following a Supreme Court ruling this summer. And, the school system is working to end a backlog of criminal background checks.
3. Students Show ‘Important Growth’ In Statewide Assessment Testing: Overall, 57% of MCPS students were proficient in statewide testing, which exceeded the average state proficiency rate of 50.8%. MCPS saw proficiency levels rise in 12 of the 16 tested areas, with scores remaining flat in the other four, according to results from the 2024-2025 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP).

4. Transition Day: While Tuesday was the official first day of school, Monday was the school system’s first-ever transition day for kindergartners, sixth graders and ninth graders, plus students attending a new school for the first time.
5. Back-to-School Fair: Families and staff were at the back-to-school fair Saturday at Westfield Wheaton mall ahead of the academic year, which begins in a new federal landscape.
