MCPS Salaries Revealed in Freedom of Information Report

On Monday, the top 100 salaries in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) for FY2025 were published by Bethesda Magazine.

In July when the magazine initially requested this list from MCPS, the school system told them they would have to pay for the document due to services needed to create it. Presented with a potential bill for $193.92, the magazine filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). They asked for a fee waiver since MCPS has not charged for the list in the past. That request was granted.

The list reveals 25 salaries in excess of $200 thousand dollars. Superintendent Thomas Taylor tops the list at $360, 000. The highest earning principal, Shawaan Robinson, takes home $202, 785. A 27-year veteran of MCPS, he serves as principal at Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville.

The current MCPS administration has stressed transparency in their operations, but this seems like a departure from that policy. According to federal and state open government laws public employee salaries should be accessible as public records.  These laws apply to school system employees whose salaries are paid with taxpayer money.

MCM reached out to Council Vice President Will Jawando, Chair of the Education and Culture Committee, to ask for his comments. As of this writing we have not received a statement.
