Mold Remediation Continues In School District

Mold at Montgomery County Public Schools continues to be an issue, but school district officials are ensuring the public they’re working to remedy the problem.

Recently, Christine Handy, president of the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals, described working conditions in the Carver Education Services Center in Rockville. The building has mold, bugs that bite and inadequate ventilation, she said.

Some of the employees working in the former high school temporarily have moved to Grosvenor Center in Bethesda. This was done to deal with health issues and also to allow remediation work to be done at Carver, explained Essie McGuire, MCPS chief of staff, during a county council Education and Culture Committee meeting Thursday.

“Carver is a challenging building,” she said, adding, “We are not evacuating Carver. It is not at that level of emergency.”

Previously, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor noted that mold and poor ventilation plague some buildings.

“We have a number of schools that we are monitoring very closely,” Taylor said. “This is going to be an ongoing problem,” he said, adding buildings have not been maintained on a regular basis, with many projects pushed to a later date. “It is something that is going to take us many years to correct.”
