Takoma Park Man Charged with Assault

Charles Jones, 58, of Takoma Park was charged with first- and second-degree assault and disorderly conduct in connection with an incident in the lobby of a building in the 7300 block of New Hampshire Avenue Tuesday evening around 5:50 p.m.

Takoma Park police officers received a report of an assault in progress. When they arrived, officers saw a man throwing rocks at another person.

Jones was taken into custody and searched, according to police, who said they found drug paraphernalia in his pocket.

The victim told police that the incident started with Jones sitting outside the building and cursing. When the victim approached Jones, he waved a knife, according to police. The victim then struck Jones with a laptop and went back into the building as Jones followed him and continued to threaten him with the knife, police said.

The victim then disarmed Jones and held him until the officers arrived. A knife was found at the scene.

Takoma Park Fire Department personnel responded to provide medical assistance. The victim was treated at the scene for a minor head injury but refused further medical care, police said.

He was then taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit and charged.
