
The next county council will feature many new faces with five of the 11 members not seeking reelection and other members facing challengers in the primary on June 23, 2026.
Although candidates have until Feb. 24, 2026 to file, several already have either filed or announced plans to run, especially for the At-Large seats.
Councilmembers Andrew Friedson, Evan Glass and Will Jawando are competing to become the next county executive and therefore will not be on council again. Sidney Katz is term limited and cannot seek reelection, and Gabe Albornoz announced he will not run for reelection.
Councilmember Laurie Anne Sayles is the only At-Large candidate seeking reelection for the four At-Large seats. So far, Prabu Selvam, Board of Education member Karla Silvestre, Steve Solomon and Christa Tichy have filed to run. Other candidates who have announced but not yet filed include Jeremy Pope, Scott Goldberg, Josie Rose Cabalerro, and Fatmata Barrie.
In District 1, Board of Education member Julie Yang and Drew Morrison are running for Andrew Friedson’s seat.
Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe is seeking reelection in District 2 and, so far, has no challenger.
In District 3 where Katz is not running again, Ricky Fai Mui has filed. He previously ran for school board.
Council President Kate Stewart is seeking reelection in District 4 and has no challengers yet.
In District 5, Kristin Mink is seeking reelection and has no announced challengers.
In District 6, Natali Fani-González is seeking reelection and also has no challengers yet.
In District 7, Dawn Luedtke announced that she will seek reelection. She has one challenger, Sharif Hidayat. He previously ran for school board.
