Montgomery County Police officers are investigating an incident that left an Odessa Shannon Middle School student in serious condition after being struck in the head by a metal object during a gym class Oct. 22.

“A student was struck by what was described as a metal object thrown by another student, resulting in injuries that required immediate medical attention,” wrote Principal Natasha H. Booms in a letter to the Odessa Shannon school community.

The student, named Lenny in the public by his mother, Emily Diaz via a GoFundMe fundraiser, was hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care unit.

In an email to MCM, a public information officer confirmed that detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department’s 4th District were investigating, adding, “There are no updates to share at this time.”

Diaz set up the GoFundMe page shortly after the incident for her son, stating on the fundraising page, “We aren’t sure of medical bills yet and special items he might need on his road to recovery.” As of Monday, almost $31,000 was donated.

“The injury he sustained was an open skull injury and the bone fragments went into his brain,” Diaz also wrote online.

“[M]y son is a very smart, loving, adventurous young boy and I feel like his life was taken even though he’s still alive. We are unsure of how he will be after recovery, but the possibilities of him being impaired are there (speech, mobility & memory). I’m praying God does his miracle in him and he recovers and comes back as he was,” said Diaz in a statement on the fundraising site.
