The Odessa Shannon Middle School student who was seriously injured after being struck in the head by a metal object during gym class Oct. 22 returned home from the hospital Wednesday, according to Emily Diaz, the student’s mother, who shared the update on Facebook.
The mother of the student, who was identified as Lenny Diaz, also posted that her son is now home until his “next surgery and that one we will celebrate 1000x harder.”
Her son originally was treated in a local hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit and then moved for physical therapy to a rehabilitation hospital in Washington, D.C.
“Lenny, you did it, buddy. Thank you, God, for never letting go of Lenny before, during & after surgery,” wrote the mother in a social media post.
Montgomery County Police are investigating the incident. The principal at Odessa Shannon Middle School, Natasha H. Booms, Ph. D., described the incident in a letter as follows: “A student was struck by what was described as a metal object thrown by another student, resulting in injuries that required immediate medical attention.”
MCM requested a copy of the incident report via the Maryland Public Information Act, but was denied access.
In a Nov. 6 letter, Montgomery County Public Schools Deputy Chief of Communications Christopher Cram wrote that the requested documents were withheld due to student privacy. He noted the information was “privileged or confidential by law.”
“Disclosure of such emails would, in our view, discourage full and frank deliberations by MCPS decision makers and other Montgomery County agencies, which is contrary to the public interest,” wrote Cram.
