Maryland will start issuing full federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits Tuesday, Nov. 18, following the end of the 43-day government shutdown, the longest in U.S. history.
Residents who would have normally received SNAP benefits before Nov. 18, had there not been a government shutdown, will continue to get at least half the funds, according to an announcement by the state’s Department of Human Services. The remainder of the funds will be deposited Tuesday. Those who usually receive benefits on and after Nov. 18 will get their full benefits as regularly scheduled.
SNAP benefits were set to expire Saturday, Nov. 1. Two judge rulings came down the day before, ordering the Trump administration to use emergency funds to keep the program going. As uncertainty continued around the benefits, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced $62 million to make up for half of the benefits that were at risk of being on hold due to the shutdown.
