Newcomer Challenges King in District 39 State Senate Race

Amar Mukunda (D), a first-time candidate from Germantown, will run to challenge longtime incumbent State Sen. Nancy King (D) in 2026.

Mukunda originally registered to run as a delegate for District 39 in the Maryland State House. Now he has changed his course and has filed for election as the Senator from District 39.

King currently also serves as the Majority Leader in the State Senate. She was first elected to her office in District 39 in 2007.

An engineer and entrepreneur, Makunda, age 32, questions the opposition of King and Senate President Bill Ferguson to the proposal to redistrict the state before the 2026 election. He urges voters to “Fight Back.”

Here’s a video he posted online about his position on redistricting and other issues.

Mukunda also objects to the current leadership’s blocking of more progressive issues like immigration enforcement and funding for school meals.

In 2010, King was challenged by Saqib Ali but survived that competitive primary.
