The 28th and final Purple Line car was recently delivered and it is “a major milestone,” according to the Maryland Transit Administration.
The project is almost 85% complete with more than 148,000 of a total of 193,100 feet of track laid.
The light-rail service, which will run from Bethesda to New Carrollton, is expected to accept passengers in early 2027. There will be 10 stations in Montgomery County and 11 in Prince George’s County.
The cars are 142 feet long and can hold 430 passengers, with seats for 80. The vehicles were built by CAF, a railcar manufacturer based in Spain. They were assembled in Elmira, New York.
The cars are undergoing “an extensive commissioning and testing process,” according to Purple Line Senior Project Director, Ray Biggs II.
