Van Hollen and McClain Delaney Rally Against Renaming of Kennedy Center

On Saturday, U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen spoke at a rally to protest the renaming of the Kennedy Center to include President Donald Trump.

In a post on YouTube, Van Hollen declared, “Shame! And we are here to say that this desecration of the Kennedy Center will not stand.”

The Senator promised he would reverse the name change no matter how long it took.

He told his fellow protesters that the President “…doesn’t respect the arts. In fact, his budget eliminated funding for The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. He doesn’t give a damn about the arts. All he cares about is himself and enriching his family.”

Van Hollen vowed to address the name change when the Senate reconvenes on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. He told the crowd he and his fellow senators would reverse the renaming with an amendment to the Interior Department Appropriations Bill.

On Monday, 6th District U.S. Rep. April McClain Delaney introduced a similar bill in the House of Representatives. She stated, “The Kennedy Center is a memorial to a fallen President. Changing the name of the Kennedy Center is a betrayal of President Kennedy’s legacy and an affront to the American people and our shared history,”
