Summer camps in Montgomery County offer fun and learning for students

As summer approaches, families in Montgomery County have a variety of camps to choose from to keep kids active, creative and learning during their break from school. Local programs range from traditional outdoor camps to specialized options in sports, arts, media and STEM. Most camps run in week-long sessions from June to August, and many begin registration in late winter or early spring.

Traditional day camps remain a popular choice for many families.

  • Bar-T Ranch Summer Camp offers classic summer activities such as outdoor adventures, horseback riding, swimming, sports and arts and crafts. The camp is known for helping kids build confidence and friendships in a fun, supportive environment. Enrollment is now open, with the registration portal available on their website.
  • Butler Camp, one of the oldest day camps in Maryland, also provides a traditional camp experience with swimming, sports, arts and special events, and is recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere and strong sense of community. Enrollment is now open.
  • Valley Mill Camp in Darnestown focuses on outdoor adventure, including hiking, boating, swimming, archery, and nature exploration, for children who enjoy spending time outside. Enrollment is now open.

Families interested in creative and academic enrichment have several strong options as well.

  • Summer at Sandy Spring offers a mix of arts, outdoor play and hands-on activities in partnership with local schools and community groups.
  • Tech-minded students may enjoy Montgomery College Drobots Drone STEM Camps, which teach drone programming, engineering and STEM skills to elementary, middle and high school students. Registration begins Monday, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m.
  • For kids interested in performing arts, Imagination Stage offers summer camps in theater, music, movement, and storytelling that often culminate in performances for family and friends. Registration is now open on their website.

Sports-minded families will find no shortage of options either.

For students interested in media or communications Play By Play Sports Broadcasting Camp at Montgomery Community Media offers a unique opportunity to learn play-by-play announcing, interviewing and broadcast production in a working studio setting. The camp provides a chance to explore careers in journalism, broadcasting and sports media.

Most camps allow families to sign up for individual weeks throughout the summer, with both full-day and half-day options available depending on age and program. Because popular sessions fill quickly, families are encouraged to register early, often beginning in late winter.
