Democrats hope to redraw state Congressional map

Governor Moore’s Redistricting Advisory Commission has drawn a new map of the state’s congressional districts. This comes after a 3-2 vote by the commission last week.

State Senate PresidentBill Ferguson, a Democrat from Silver Spring, opposes the measure and has called it “objectively unconstitutional.”

The net result of the new congressional plan supports the altering of District 1, now represented by Republican Rep. Andy Harris, a physician from Dorchester County.

The new geography would include parts of Anne Arundel and Howard counties in District 1. Both counties lean heavily Democratic. The demographic shift would make District 1 more competitive for Democrats in the upcoming election.

According to state-focused news sources, the Maryland House appears poised to pass any new legislation that tips the map in the Democrats’ direction. The approval by the senate seems less guaranteed.

Maryland Democrats are responding to mid-decade congressional redistricting by Texas and North Carolina that favored Republicans and, thus, changed the balance of power in the U.S. House.

The 2022 map splits Montgomery County into the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th congressional districts. The proposed map would only make minor adjustments to those boundaries, but still favor Democrats. District 1 would experience the greatest impact in the redrawn borders.
