Reardon Sullivan declares Council candidacy for District 1

Reardon Sullivan, former chair of the Montgomery County Republican Party, declared his candidacy for the District 1 seat on the county council Monday.

Spending

A former candidate for county executive, Sullivan was the force behind the successful term limits amendment for the county executive office. He said he wants to rein in county spending and looks to cap spending increases to the prior year’s inflation rate.

He puts an emphasis on affordability and a review of spending before raises in taxation or fees.

Economic Development

By improving what he considers weak job and business growth in the county, Sullivan favors creating a bigger corporate tax base.

Public Safety

Pledging to donate 30% of his council salary to the County Police Foundation and the Municipal & County Government Employees Organization, he wants to create stronger public safety initiatives.

Education

Keeping schools safer and more effective, Sullivan supports “better education alternatives” in the face of what he sees as declining school performance.

Councilmember Andrew Friedson currently represents the residents of District 1 and is a candidate for county executive.

Other Candidates

Three Democrats are running for that District 1 seat, too:

  • Julie Yang, a current member of the Board of Education and former President of that body
  • Debbie Spielberg, a senior aide to County Executive Marc Elrich
  • Drew Morrison, one-time aide to Councilmember Roger Berliner and a policy advisor to the state Department of Transportation
