A 16-year-old boy was shot by another 16-year-old boy inside Wootton High School in Rockville on Monday, according to police.

As of around 8:30 p.m. Monday, police were still in search of a weapon.

“As of this press conference, a firearm has not yet been recovered,” said Rockville City Police Chief Jason West. He said detectives will work throughout the night.

The victim, who was found with a single gunshot wound in a hallway, is in stable condition. The suspect is in custody.

The motive is still under investigation.

“We’re not quite sure as to what led up to this,” West said.

The suspect, a minor, will be charged as an adult, said police. Authorities did not release his name.

“This is a very active and ongoing investigation at this time,” West said. He said police are working with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding charges.

Wootton reopened on time Tuesday, as directed by Montgomery County Public Schools. There will be “mental health support” for students and staff for the rest of the week, said Superintendent Thomas Taylor.
