County marks Lunar New Year

Montgomery County officials are celebrating Lunar New Year with a range of proclamations, cultural programs and community activities this month, reflecting the holiday’s significance in one of the nation’s most diverse counties.

County Executive Marc Elrich and members of the Montgomery County Council, presented a proclamation recognizing the start of the Lunar New Year on Feb. 10, honoring the Year of the Fire Horse. The annual recognition underscores the contributions of the county’s vibrant Asian-American communities.

In remarks shared in a press release, leaders said the holiday, rooted in traditions observed across East and Southeast Asia, is a moment for “family, reflection and optimism”. And the holiday was an opportunity for residents of all backgrounds to deepen their understanding of cultural customs.

County social media and official updates noted that Lunar New Year celebrations are taking place across Montgomery County through February, featuring performances, traditional foods and community gatherings.

Libraries are among the county agencies hosting holiday events. They include programs ranging from story times and sing-alongs to craft activities designed to teach young residents about Lunar New Year traditions. Events take place at branches, including Connie Morella Library in Bethesda and others in Germantown, Olney and Wheaton. Patrons can enjoy activities like lion and dragon dance appearances, cultural demonstrations and arts workshops.

County calendars and community guides list additional celebrations supported by local partners. In Bethesda, Westfield Montgomery is organizing lion and dragon dances, live music, calligraphy stations and family-friendly performances on multiple days, often in collaboration with cultural organizations. In Rockville, a celebration at Richmond Montgomery High School will feature interactive exhibits, performances and activities for children

Officials have emphasized that these events provide a chance not only to honor longstanding traditions but also to highlight Montgomery County’s multicultural identity. The county estimates more than 15% of its residents identify as Asian American, making the Lunar New Year a meaningful occasion for many families and community groups.
