WSSC Water moves from repairs to bypass system installation in Germantown

WSSC Water completed emergency repairs Sunday to a collapsed sewer main on Liberty Mill Road in Germantown and now is working on a large-scale bypass pumping operation.

About 110-feet of new 30-inch diameter PVC sewer main was installed between two manholes.

Crews currently are backfilling the excavation during their around-the-clock repair.

Upcoming operations include inspection of nearby sewer mains and clearing debris from sections of the 30-inch diameter main downstream of the collapse where sediment likely accumulated, according to WSSC Water.

Crews are finalizing details on a sewer rehabilitation project, replacing and repairing approximately 1,708 feet of sewer main in this area and rehabilitating 18 manholes.

Germantown Elementary School, which had been closed Thursday because of the collapse, opened Monday. Safety fencing has been installed around the bypass pumping operation.

The collapse first was reported March 19 at 6:31 a.m. Crews have been at the scene since then.

WSSC Water customers are asked to keep wipes and grease out of the pipes, which should keep emergency operations on track.
