$1M federal grant awarded to Wheaton affordable housing redevelopment project

Montgomery Housing Partnership received $1 million in federal funding to develop the Amherst Affordable Housing Redevelopment, a mixed-use affordable housing project planned for Wheaton.

As part of the Amherst Wheaton Arts Project, the partnership will redevelop its existing property and a neighboring parcel of land. The existing 125-unit, three-story garden-style apartment building will be upgraded into a modernized living space with 272 rental units, 39 for-sale townhomes and a cultural arts center, for a total of 311 housing units.

“The rising cost of housing continues to weigh heavily on far too many Maryland families,” U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Md.-D said. “That’s why we fought to secure $1 million in federal funding to support more affordable, accessible options in Wheaton that better meet growing needs. This investment will help more Montgomery County families have stable housing and economic security – a win for our entire community.”

The grant money will be used for predevelopment costs, covering expenses such as design and construction documents, building permits and land-use entitlements. This will enable MHP to work on this project without taking on additional debt.

The funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 minibus spending bill.

“My north star is creating economic opportunity for Marylanders. To do that, we need to create pathways to building wealth,” said U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, Md.-D. “Right now, the cost of rent is way too high and homeownership is far out of reach for most Americans.”

The complex will be within a half-mile of the Wheaton Metro station.
