Early voting begins; Mail-in voters urged to use replacement or be counted as provisional

Maryland early voting began Thursday morning for the primary election and runs through Thursday, June 18.

There are 14 early voting centers in Montgomery County, including inside the Silver Spring Civic Building, where MCM talked with County Board of Elections officials on the first day of early voting. Early voting centers are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. See the list of centers here.

As the June 23 Election Day nears and early voting gets underway, some may choose to vote by mail. More than 400,000 mail-in ballots were re-sent after a printing issue produced ballots that were sent out to voters with the incorrect party affiliation, and officials are urging all mail-in voters to use replacement ballots that they will receive, even if they already returned the original ballot.

If a voter does not return their replacement ballot, canvassers who review ballots will confirm that the original ballot matches the voter’s party affiliation before counting it. Voters can put their mail-in ballots in any one of the county’s 58 drop boxes through Election Day. Ballots returned via the mail must be postmarked no later than June 23.

The next canvass in Montgomery County is set for Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m. in Gaithersburg.

For early voting, residents can visit any one of the county’s 14 centers, but to cast their ballots on Election Day residents must go to their assigned polling location.

To find the nearest early voting center, residents can text “EV” and a zip code to 77788. To find the closest ballot drop box, residents can text BOX and a zip code to 77788.
