Lawmakers in Annapolis passed HB 2100, a bill proposing a change to the state constitution that would allow remapping of congressional districts on Tuesday. But the bill scheduled as a ballot referendum could face challenges before November.
Republicans oppose the measure which they see as a blatant attempt to eliminate their party from congressional representation. They claim the redistricting effort should have been mounted earlier with a July deadline and more input from the public.
Senate Minority Leader Stephen S. Hershey Jr. promised to bring the bill before the court. He told Maryland Matters, “We’re going to try to get this into the court as soon as we possibly can to try to put any type of delay that we can.”
Ballot language needed to be submitted by Wednesday when the bill was signed by Gov. Wes Moore.
The proposed amendment would go into effect for the 2028 election if approved by voters.
