18-year-old jumps to death off I-495 overpass

Following a crash on I-495 in Kensington on Sunday evening, an 18-year-old driver fled the scene and later jumped off an overpass. The Maryland State Police report the young man leaped onto Stonybrook Drive. EMS personnel attempted to revive him but he died at the scene.

The deceased 18-year-old, who is not being identified, was driving a blue Ford Fusion. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.

Troopers from the Rockville Barrack were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on the outer loop of I-495 past Georgia Avenue, after 7:00 p.m. Sunday.  Police received several reports of an individual running along the northbound shoulder of I-495 towards Connecticut Avenue. He was wearing gray pants and no shirt, according to an MDPS investigation.

The deceased was driving a Ford Fusion when he struck a blue Chevrolet pickup truck that was being towed.

The 18-year-old exited his vehicle and fled on foot, running along the shoulder of I-495, witnesses told police.

The fleeing driver then jumped over the overpass railing onto Stoney Brook Drive moments after troopers arrived.

Besides the deceased, there were no reported injuries.
