The Montgomery County Board of Elections needs registered voters to serve as election workers during early voting (Oct. 27 through Nov. 3) and at polling places for the Nov. 8 gubernatorial general election.

Bilingual Volunteers

Voters who speak Amharic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean, Vietnamese, and other languages are needed. Voters who are fluent in both English and Spanish are especially needed in each polling place to meet the requirements of the 1975 Voting Rights Act. Volunteers can earn up to $1,830 as a stipend depending on the position and number of days served. More information is available on the BOE website at 777vote.org, and select Election Workers, then Position Description/Stipend.

Student Volunteers

Students 16 years old or older are eligible to register to vote and serve as election poll workers. Each student must demonstrate, to the satisfaction the Maryland State Board of Elections, that they meet all qualifications for registration in the State. Students serving as election workers may choose to earn up to 65 Student Service Learning (SSL) credits in lieu of the $650 stipend.

Volunteer Qualifications and Training

To serve in this paid volunteer position all election poll workers must be registered to vote in the State of Maryland, able to speak, read, and write the English language, and cannot hold, or be a candidate for, public or party office. In addition, election workers may not serve as a campaign manager for a candidate or as treasurer for any campaign finance entity.

Training will be provided to all election workers. This includes an online quiz, and in-person classroom training. Volunteers will be paid for completing training and working during early voting and on election day. There are several different positions.

To apply to serve as an election worker, text SERVE to 77788 or online at www.777vote.org and select Election Workers, then Getting Started. For poll worker information, visit www.777vote.org and select the Election Workers’ link, call 240-777-8533, or email election.judge@montgomerycountymd.gov.
