Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP) officially opened its 3,250th affordable apartment unit in Montgomery County Tuesday.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for The Residences at Forest Glen, a 189-unit within walking distance of the Forest Glen Metro in Silver Spring.
“This is not just about housing. It’s about providing opportunity,” Councilmember Andrew Friedson said. “This housing is luxury housing. It just happens to be affordable.”
MHP, county and state funding of about $100 million altogether enabled a deteriorating apartment unit on the site to be purchased and torn down and the new two buildings to be constructed.
Within a short time of word getting out about the new complex, close to 900 people expressed interest and 500 applications were received.
The one-, two- and three-bedroom units rent for between $1,600 to $2,255 or much less depending on a tenant’s income.
Each apartment comes with its own washer and dryer. Tenants pay for their utilities.
There are large rooms for a gym, club room and working spaces. Two outdoor courtyards, a playground and two separate underground garages form part of the complex on Georgia Avenue.
According to Executive Marc Elrich, there were 42,000 affordable housing units in the county in 2000. The cost of those units was low enough for people with a reduced income to afford to live there without government assistance. In 2020, that number dropped to 20,000 units, and by 2030, Elrich expects that number will fall below 10,000.
