After 44 Years, Wheaton Barber Hanging Up His Scissors

Richard Miller started cutting hair in Wheaton in 1979. 44 years later, he is closing up shop and retiring on Wednesday.

Miller, 75, said it was time to step away from the store on Georgia Avenue and head out west to some national parks. He will miss the camaraderie and listening to and sharing parts of his customer’s lives.

When he started as an employee, haircuts were $4.25. He moved up to owner when his former boss got sick, and he has since cut the hair of so many people he can’t even estimate the number.

Although he tried, Miller has not been successful at getting anyone to purchase his shop that still has its original chairs and fixtures.
