Although the gubernatorial primary isn’t until June 30, 2026. some state and county officials already have filed for reelection. More are expected now that the General Assembly’s legislative session has ended.
District 20 is the only district so far where the four legislators announced intentions to run again as a team.
Maryland Sen. Will Smith and Delegates Lorig Charkoudian, Jheanelle Wilkins and David Moon, announced in a joint statement that they are all running for reelection in the 2026 Gubernatorial election.
“We have led together with principle, delivered for our community, and fought to ensure that every voice in District 20 is heard and represented,” the legislators wrote.
“We have been on the frontlines – defending our state, our democracy, and our most vulnerable neighbors,” they wrote in their joint statement.
Vowing to continue fighting against “attacks on our values from the federal level, and growing pressure on our public institutions,” the legislators said they would keep working for immigrants, federal workers and members of the LGBTQ+ community. They look forward to expanding health care and reproductive rights and tackling rising costs and transportation needs.
Other state legislators listed as seeking reelection are Sen. Sara Love in District 20 and Delegate Marc Korman in District 16.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy and Sheriff Maxwell Uy have both filed for reelection.
Although Montgomery Councilmember Evan Glass declared his candidacy for County Executive, he has not yet filed the required paperwork. Celeste Iroha has filed on the Democratic ticket. That is expected to be a very competitive race.
Executive Marc Elrich is term limited and cannot seek reelection. He previously declared he will run for an at-large seat on the County Council, although he has not filed yet.
In fact, the only person listed at the Maryland Board of Elections website under County Council is Natali Fani-González, who currently represents District 6.
