Bethesda’s Vissering makes Olympic mark in bobsled

Taking part in his first Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, Carsten Vissering of Bethesda was a member of the United States’ 4-man bobsled team that finished 11th.

Team Horn, made up of pilot Kris Horn and push athletes Vissering, Hunter Powell and Caleb Furnell, placed 11th out of a possible 20 teams in the event. The team’s combined four-run time of 3.39.94, was 2.37 behind the winner.

Vissering had a unique path to becoming an Olympic bobsledder. Growing up in Montgomery County, Vissering was a high-level competitive swimmer. He swam at the University of Southern California and tried to qualify for the 2016 Sumer Olympics in breaststroke. After college, Vissering stumbled in to bobsledding. He found a workout that the sport used and his interest was piqued.

And the rest is Olympic history. Congratulations, Carsten.
