Bills Would Provide Paid Parental Leave, Lactation Rooms for County Employees

Councilmembers want to set an example for employers to help working parents in Montgomery County.

On Tuesday, County Councilmember Andrew Friedson introduced two bills to help county employees. One requires six weeks of paid parental leave at 100% salary, and the other requires all county buildings to have a lactation room or alternate accommodation. Friedson hopes the legislation will encourage other employers to offer similar policies for their own employees.

Council President Gabe Albornoz, Councilmembers Tom Hucker, Sidney Katz and Nancy Navarro are co-sponsors. Navarro said she will look into amendments after receiving feedback about those who experience stillbirth.

A public hearing for the bills is tentatively set for July 12.
