Nicole Murray-Lewis, a social studies educator at James H. Blake High School in Silver Spring, was elected to serve as the teacher member of the Maryland Board of Education.
She is a 28-year veteran educator and previously taught at Gaithersburg High School.
Murray-Lewis received 39.8% of the 3,624 votes cast. Coming in second was Theresa Mitchell Dudley, a middle school teacher in Prince George’s County, who received 8.38% of the votes.
Murray-Lewis’ appointment will be sent to Gov. Wes Moore and is subject to confirmation by the State Senate.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Arts in Social Science/History from Southern University and the A&M College in Baton Rouge, La.
She has three children, all of whom attended Montgomery County Public Schools.
During her run for the position, she called education “the greatest equalizer in society.” She also noted, “If entrusted with this role, I will work to bridge divides, lift up voices too often ignored, and advance policies that prepare every child for success in the 21st century—no matter their background or ZIP code.”
