Carrie and Karen will each read from their most recently published picture books, host a short Q&A, and end with a fun craft to take home and enjoy!

  • Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"

    Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025

    Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.

    The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • Garden Club: Sogetsu Ikebana: 100 Years of Freedom From Form

    Sogetsu is a practice of Japanese flower arranging that frees the participant from constraints of a prescribed form and promotes self-expression regardless of all distinctions. 

    This presentation will be a journey through Sogetsu Ikebana, exploring the beauty of natural and unconventional materials. Arrangements using locally sourced, purchased and created material will be displayed and demonstrated. Personal photos from the 13th World Convention of Ikebana in Kyoto, Japan will be shared and discussed.

    A public forum, RESISTING ICE - LESSONS LEARNED, will be hosted by the Takoma Park Mobilization on Sunday, April 19th, from 2:00 to 4:30 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 6951 Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park, MD. 

    Experts from Maryland's Attorney General's office, the Governor's Office on Immigrant Rights, legislative director from WE ARE CASA along with community leaders working in Minneapolis, Hagerstown, and Hyattsville will share their experiences and hard-learned lessons.

    Neon Creek is an “electro-trad” duo from Philadelphia that blends the contra tunes you know and love with novel electronic textures. Featuring Chloe Rosenthal (keyboard/synth/computer) and Jared Bishop (fiddle), the duo uses live looping, layered effects, and in-the-moment improvisation to interpret trad tunes in a new light. If you’re wondering what electronica-infused contra dance feels like, the answer is simple: come find out!

    Celebrate Yom HaAtzma’ut 2026 / 5786 Israeli Independence Day with Jewish Art Education through this virtual public program!

    The Art of Israel surveys the history of the land through art objects. It begins with the building of King Solomon’s Temple and continues with the Jewish catacombs, the synagogue mosaics, and the establishment of the modern State of Israel. This program follows the sweep of Israeli history while focusing on the visual arts and artists of recent centuries. The Art of Israel highlights this most important country and its artworks. Enjoy the powerful art included in the slideshow as well as the in-depth narration.

    The presentation will be recorded. ï»żAll registrants will receive a link to the recording, which will be available for 14 days.

    Funds raised from our public programs will be used to assist organizations that could not otherwise afford our regular program fees.

    In 2015, Olney Theatre produced the Rolling World Premiere of I And You by Lauren Gunderson, which went on to become one of the most-produced plays in America. Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

  • Step by Step: The Ruby Bridges Suite, a Benefit Concert

    Come celebrate the story of Ruby Bridges, the trailblazing African-American girl who, at age 6, integrated the New Orleans Public Schools in 1960. 
    This musical work by Portland-based composer Darrell Grant chronicles the story of Ruby Bridges in a multi-movement piece for eight instrumentalists, vocalists, and a narrator. Drawing on gospel, jazz and chamber music along with spoken word and images, it illustrates an emotional portrait of a dramatic time in US history.

    The suite will be performed by the choir, soloists, and instrumentalists from the Cedar Lane music program along with guest vocalists and musicians.

    Concert: 7:00 PM
    Suggested Love Offering: $30 / seat

    The beneficiary of this benefit concert is Congregation Action Network. Congregation Action Network is a vibrant interfaith coalition striving to create a community where everyone, no matter their immigration status, has the same access to rights and resources.

    Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025

    Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.

    The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

    In 2015, Olney Theatre produced the Rolling World Premiere of I And You by Lauren Gunderson, which went on to become one of the most-produced plays in America. Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

    #FreedomWalk2026 comes to the Riverworks Outdoor Stage on Thursday, April 30, from 6-8pm. 

    Riverworks is proud to host Anthony Cohen, a 2,200-pound bronze sculpture of Harriett Tubman by Wesley Wofford, and live music by Jay Summerour and Mark Puryear at a rally to support Cohen’s travel from Maryland to Canada along the path of the Underground Railroad. 

    “The mission of the walk is to bring attention to what Harriett Tubman stood for as an American,” said Cohen. “Harriett means unwavering courage, liberation, and humanitarianism.”

    The event will take place on the grounds of the Old Methodist Church, 17617 W Willard Ave, Poolesville, MD on Thursday, Apr 30, 6:00-8:00pm. Cohen will speak followed by a live performance of the bluesy sounds of locally-adored harmonica player and vocalist, Jay Summerour, and guitarist and ethnomusicologist, Mark Puryear. Both have been recorded by Smithsonian Folkways.

    Cohen made this walk in 1996 as a 32-year-old graduate student, in search of of traces of Harriett Tubman’s Underground Railroad. 30 years later and now an established historian Cohen walks with a message to the nation on its 250th birthday: “Let’s take pride in all the great moments of our past as we look forward to our collective future.”

    “Harriett means unwavering courage, liberation, and humanitarianism. The sculpture, titled ‘Journey to Freedom,’ will draw a lot of attention along the way and, frankly, that’s the point. We can all take pride and engage in our shared story.”

Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

  • Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"

    Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025

    Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.

    The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

    In 2015, Olney Theatre produced the Rolling World Premiere of I And You by Lauren Gunderson, which went on to become one of the most-produced plays in America. Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

  • Bethesda Fine Arts Festival

    The 20th annual Bethesda Fine Arts Festival returns, featuring over 100 of the nation's best contemporary artists, plus live entertainment and local Bethesda restaurants. Artists from across the country will gather to showcase and sell their original paintings, drawing, photography, furniture, jewelry, woodwork, ceramics and more. The festival will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 10am – 6pm; and Sunday, May 10, 2026 from 10am – 5pm. 

    The festival will take place in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle, along Norfolk, Auburn & Del Ray Avenues. Admission to the festival is FREE and parking is available in the public parking garage on Auburn and Del Ray Avenues. This event is held rain or shine.

    Participating restaurants including BabyCat Brewery, Benihana, Bethesda Curry Kitchen, California Tortilla, and The Red Bandana Bakery. This year’s live entertainment includes Sara Jones, Rock Creek Revival, Kiti Gartner and the Drifting Valentines, La Unica, Jay Byrd, Miss Moon, and Cecily.

    Acclaimed santoor virtuoso Vinay Desai invites listeners on a deeply immersive musical journey that blends meditative calm with rhythmic intensity. Known for his expressive improvisation and refined sense of rhythm, Vinay opens the evening with a melodic exploration that draws the audience into a space of deep stillness and introspection.

    As the mood of the raag is established and the sonic landscape takes shape, Anirudh joins on tabla, adding dynamic rhythmic interplay that seamlessly merges with Vinay’s flowing phrases.   • Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"

    Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025

    Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.

    The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • Multicultural Senior Services Fair

    Join The Arc Montgomery County for our Multicultural Senior Services Fair, a free community event where live, in-person interpreters will be available so seniors and caregivers can get support in the language they feel most comfortable speaking.

    In addition to English, interpreters will be available for Spanish, French, Amharic, Chinese, Russian, and more.

    This fair removes language barriers and creates direct access to organizations offering essential services across Montgomery County, including Medicaid waivers, the Medicare Guide Program, respite coordination, long-term care supports, and veterans’ services. Additional resources will cover housing options, transportation assistance, food programs, and caregiver supports.

    With on-site interpretation and culturally responsive support, everyone is welcome. We look forward to connecting seniors and caregivers to the resources they need with care, respect, and community.

    In 2015, Olney Theatre produced the Rolling World Premiere of I And You by Lauren Gunderson, which went on to become one of the most-produced plays in America. Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

  • 17th Annual Gaithersburg Book Festival

    The Gaithersburg Book Festival is a free annual celebration of great books and great writing that has made its mark as one of the nation’s top literary events. More than 100 featured best-selling and award-winning authors – including Rabih Alameddine, Stephanie Dray, Jonathan Karl, Dorian Elizabeth Knapp, Christopher Kondrich, Cynthia Manick, Jason Mott, Keith O’Brien, George Packer, Susan Page, Brian Lies, Erin Entrada Kelly, Linda Sue Park, Sarah Dessen, John Patrick Green and more – will participate in presentations and panel discussions.   • Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"

    Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025

    Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.

    The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • I & You: The Musical

    In 2015, Olney Theatre produced the Rolling World Premiere of I And You by Lauren Gunderson, which went on to become one of the most-produced plays in America. Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while
 and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.

  • JGSGW Database 101: Because Google Can’t Do This

    Speaker Harry Moatz created a Jewish genealogy database available to only members of the JGSGW, which he will be guiding us through. The database contains resources for over 150 countries and regions, as well as more that 50 topics including towns/shtetl, metric, tax, voter and revision lists, censuses, police files, conscription, military records, cemeteries, etc.

    This one-hour program, conducted over Zoom at 1:30 PM Eastern Time, is free for members. This is one of the many activities that is a benefit of JGSGW membership.

    Harry Moatz: Retired attorney, from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office several years ago where he was the Director of Enrollment and Discipline, after serving as an Associate Solicitor and Primary Patent Examiner. His former career served him well for genealogical research. Always having had an interest in the origins of his family in what is now Ukraine, Belarus, England, Sweden, Scandinavia and Hungary, he began his search over a decade ago for the facts behind family lore. His family tree now includes more than 7000 sourced individuals and multiple family lines. He learned the towns from which his grandparents emigrated, discovered that his paternal grandparents had siblings, found their descendants, found his paternal great grandfather may have had at least three wives, and developed the family lines of the machatunim. He has made numerous genealogy presentations and is a member of or subscribes to several genealogy organizations and Facebook groups. He is the President of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Washington.
