Paint the Town
Paint the Town
September 1, 2025 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Kensington Town Office, 3710 Mitchell St, Kensington, MD 20895, USA
The Montgomery Art Association (MAA) celebrates more than 200 local artists by producing one of the region’s longest-running and largest art shows. The annual three-day Paint the Town Labor Day Show will take place at the Kensington Historic Armory, 3710 Mitchell St., Kensington, MD, August 30-September 1. The event is free and open to the public.
The judged art show features hundreds of pieces of artwork by member artists from the DC area. Christopher Addison serves as the judge, recognizing work in nine categories and awarding the esteemed Bertha Clum prize in the Kensington category. All works are for sale, including original paintings, sculpture, and photography as well as prints and notecards in the exhibition’s marketplace. In addition to the main show, MAA will host its annual plein air competition. Local artists will also offer live art demonstrations.
An invitation from MAA’s President, Sylvia Douglin: Paint the Town is back—and this year’s show is shaping up to be one for the books! The Montgomery Art Association is thrilled to once again partner with the Town of Kensington to bring you a weekend full of art, community, and celebration. This beloved event is more than just an art show and sale—it’s a vibrant gathering where creativity shines, local talent takes center stage, and connections are made around every corner. We’re proud to feature paintings, drawings, sculptures, digital art, plein air, and photography—all created by local artists right here in the region. Whether you're showcasing your work, adding to your collection, or just soaking in inspiration, Paint the Town offers something for everyone. Come stroll, smile, and celebrate with us.

Made-in-Studio: Solarpunk
September 5, 2025 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Riverworks Art Center, 19215 Beallsville Rd, Beallsville, MD 20839, USA
Dystopian stories often dominate our media, portraying dark futures where technology oppresses humanity and the environment suffers. In contrast, Solarpunk imagines an optimistic alternative—an egalitarian society in harmony with local ecosystems, where technology is used to restore and regenerate rather than exploit. Emphasizing sustainability, adaptability, and a mix of high- and low-tech solutions, Solarpunk invites us to reject bleak inevitabilities and instead actively build brighter futures for all.
At Riverworks, Associate Artist Christine Hubbard will draw on her experience teaching a Solarpunk-focused college course since 2022 to guide participants through this inspiring movement. The session will explore Solarpunk philosophy through art, architecture, and real-world communities, leading into a hands-on creative project of each participant’s choice—whether visual art, writing, or multimedia. Materials can be self-provided or sourced from Riverworks’ eco-friendly collection of repurposed and natural supplies. The workshop will conclude with a group sharing and discussion, exploring ways to integrate Solarpunk ideals into daily life and community building.

Glen Echo Park, 7300 Macarthur Blvd, Glen Echo, MD 20812, USA
Bits ‘N Pieces Puppet Theatre’s “The Selfish Giant’s Garden” is based on Oscar Wilde’s famous fairy tale about a giant who learns it’s never too late to share. The production features lathe-turned wooden marionettes. The puppet’s simple wooden surface is left so children can use their imagination. The hair is made of rope, the eyes of shiny brads. The string puppet children are round and smooth while the Giant is boxy and rough. The musical show contrasts selfishness and sharing. How does a Selfish Giant learn to share? Recommended for 4+. Inside the Pitch: The Making of Red Pitch
Inside the Pitch: The Making of Red Pitch
September 20, 2025 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USA
Join Olney Theatre’s Artistic Director, Jason Loewith, in conversation with playwright Tyrell Williams for an inside look at Red Pitch—the winner of all five Off-West End Awards for Best New Play.
This engrossing drama follows Bilal, Joey, and Omz—three lifelong friends whose bond has been forged on a small soccer pitch outside their South London apartments. But their world is shifting: professional recruiters are scouting young talent, and dreams of athletic glory hang in the balance. Meanwhile, gentrification is reshaping their neighborhood, with new developments and chain shops pushing out the people and places they’ve always known. At the heart of it all lies a single question: can their friendship survive the loss of their beloved “red pitch” and everything it represents?
After sold-out runs at London’s Bush Theatre and a celebrated West End transfer, Red Pitch arrives in the United States here at Olney Theatre to critical acclaim. Hailed as “fierce, affectionate, and effortlessly funny” (The Guardian) and “a brilliant bit of writing about gentrification, friendship, masculinity, and aspiration” (Time Out London), the play has sparked important conversations on community, ambition, and resilience.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear directly from Tyrell Williams about his creative process and inspiration, and from Jason Loewith about why Red Pitch is a story that speaks powerfully to our current moment and how the story is universal.

Beyond the Stage: Soccer, Stage, and the Stories We Tell
Beyond the Stage: Soccer, Stage, and the Stories We Tell
September 27, 2025 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USA
In Red Pitch, three teenagers fight to hold onto friendship, identity, and their neighborhood—on and off the soccer pitch. Playwright Tyrell Williams uses the rhythms of the game to capture the urgency of gentrification, belonging, and growing up.
To deepen the conversation, we welcome scholar Jared Robert Strange, author of After Bend It Like Beckham: Soccer in 21st-Century Theatre and Performance. Strange explores how soccer on stage is more than a backdrop—it’s a powerful language of community, aspiration, and struggle. From The Wolves to Red Pitch, his work shows how theater transforms “the beautiful game” into a way of grappling with issues of race, power, and identity.
Join us as we talk with Jared about why soccer resonates so deeply in performance, and how Red Pitch stands in a growing tradition of plays that turn sport into a stage for the most urgent stories of our time.
