Artists & Makers Studios is thrilled to host the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association for the month of December. The exhibit will run from December 3rd through December 19th, with a First Friday opening on December 5th from 5-8pm. The Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association was founded in 1976 as a small group of artists residing in Gaithersburg. Over the years, the group has grown to include members throughout Montgomery County, Frederick and DC. GFAA provides educational programs plus promotional opportunities through exhibits. Members work in the classical mediums of two-dimensional art: oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, tempera, drawing, and the graphic arts. This past summer, many members took the opportunity to travel. While away, they might have painted or sketched on location or captured memories using their cameras. These times are not forgotten, and GFAA members are excited to exhibit their work in a show titled “Small Images Bring Joy”. A Mini-Solo exhibit for Cathy Hirsh and Nancy Jakubowski, titled “Over the Rainbow” will open in the Lounge Gallery. Enjoy a Pop-Up with Naan Pocen, the sculptural work of Francis Maduka Uduh in studio 11, along with nineteen Gallery 209 Member Artists exhibiting their latest work. Open Studios building-wide will welcome visitors to visit and learn. Shop and support local working artists and makers. Delight in a visit from Butterfly Spirits - the current Butterfly Spirits portfolio includes elderberry vodka, botanical liqueur, hazelnut whiskey and three vodka soda canned offerings. Light fare generously sponsored by The Chesapeake Framing Company.

Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
December 7, 2025 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Gallery B, 7700 Wisconsin Ave E, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA
| Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025
Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.
The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

All Aboard with Santa
December 7, 2025 2:45 pm - 5:30 pm
Gaithersburg Community Museum, 9 S Summit Ave, Gaithersburg, MD 20877, USA
Train enthusiasts will enjoy this railroad-themed visit with Santa! Get in the holiday spirit while listening to Christmas carols as you enjoy hot chocolate and cookies around the firepit. There will be holiday themed crafts for kids. Santa will be chatting with and greeting everyone from inside the cab of a 1918 steam locomotive. There will also be a quiet train car available if your little ones need a break from all the festivities.
The event is 2:30-5:30, but you are registering for the time you see Santa. There are a lot of things to do, so you should plan 45-60 minutes for your visit. For example: if you have a 2:30 Santa time, plan on staying until 3:30 or if you have a 5:30 Santa time, arrive by 4:30 so you have time to do everything.
Please bring your own camera for pictures and prepare for the day's weather. This is an indoor/outdoor event.
Because Santa is inside the locomotive, children will not be able to sit on his lap, but guests are able to stand on a platform to talk to Santa through the window of the locomotive and take pictures with Santa.
Santa is fluent in English and Spanish. Santa habla español.

Tiny Tots in Tiaras and Tuxedos—Author Francene Hill Speaks at The Writer’s Center
Tiny Tots in Tiaras and Tuxedos—Author Francene Hill Speaks at The Writer’s Center
December 8, 2025 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The Writer's Center, 4508 Walsh St, Bethesda, MD 20815, USA
| Join local author, Francene Mary Diane Hill, as she shares insights into her new biography, Tiny Tots in Tiaras and Tuxedos: The Life, Love, and Business Success of Kermit B. Hill, at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 7:00 – 8:30 pm.
This creative biography tells the story of the author's mother, Kermit B. Hill, an African American woman entrepreneur with an unforgettable name. Kermit broke racial and gender barriers, rising from segregated Arkansas to guarding wartime secrets at the Pentagon during World War II. She went on to found and lead the groundbreaking Tiny Tot Nursery School of St. Louis for six decades.
Drawing from her parents’ 80 personal love letters, hundreds of photographs, and original War Department files, Francene traces Kermit’s journey. The book reveals her path from a juvenile probation officer in segregated Arkansas, to dancing the Lindy Hop in juke joints, and ultimately becoming the founder of Tiny Tot Nursery School.
Attendees will listen to Francene read examples from Tiny Tots in Tiaras and Tuxedos and learn how she transformed genealogy records, weather reports, and newspaper clippings into this creative biography. She will also discuss her dilemma regarding the inclusion of real names in true intimate situations from her mother’s past.
Bring your copy or grab one at any of these book launch events—and don’t miss the chance to meet the author and get your book signed!

"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
December 12, 2025 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
7700 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA
What Lies Beneath featuring the works of Chris Chernow, Elizabeth Curren, and Carolee Jakes comes to Gallery B this December. These artists all earned degrees in Fine Art from the Corcoran College of Art + Design, but from three different fields of study: Book Arts, Painting, and Printmaking. In What Lies Beneath, the three artists use their different mediums to explore the concept of surface and the processes and techniques by which they can achieve their desired results.
Chris Chernow is a long-time local DC artist. As an indirect painter, Chris applies multiple layers of paint over several months to create a sense of emotion. Chris typically produces large format figure paintings on canvas in which details are absent. The focus of the work is the paint itself and the emotions it produces, rather than the specifics of the subject. Elizabeth Curren is a book artist, printmaker, painter, writer and teacher, originally from Rhode Island, now living in Bethesda, and working in the Greater Washington DC area. She incorporates block prints, collagraphs, collage, handmade paper and ephemera into her artist’s books and narratives. Carolee Jakes is a painter and printmaker from Northern Virginia, and the founder of Dead Run Studio in McLean, Virginia. Ms. Jakes taught Printmaking at Washington Waldorf School from 2015 – 2024. Her current work combines printing, painting, and assemblage as she builds and looks through visual and physical layers.
What Lies Beneath will be on view from December 5 – January 4, 2026 at Gallery B, 7700 Wisconsin Ave E, Bethesda, MD 20814. An opening reception will be held Friday, December 12 from 6–8pm. Gallery hours are: Fridays & Saturdays, 12pm-5pm and Sundays 11am-5pm. The gallery will be closed December 26-28 for the Christmas holiday.

Groundhog Day The Musical
Groundhog Day The Musical
December 12, 2025 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Imagination Stage, 4908 Auburn Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA
Meet Phil Connors, a sarcastic, self-centered, and disgruntled big-city weatherman mysteriously stuck in small-town America reliving the same day over and over and over again – with no consequences, no regrets, and no tomorrows. But once he starts getting to know associate TV producer Rita Hanson, he discovers it’s a day of second, third and fourth chances. What will it take for Phil to break the time loop? Crimes and misdemeanors? Arrest? Falling in love? Is he fated to be stuck in Punxsutawney celebrating Groundhog Day over and over again? Or will he find the courage to change himself and his fate?
Set to a hilarious and heartfelt score by Tim Minchin, Groundhog Day The Musical is an uproarious tale of a man who finds himself with all the time (he never wanted) in the world.
Like life (and February 2nd!), Groundhog Day has its ups and downs. There are a few darker moments — gunshot sound effects, self-harm, and some strong language — but it all circles back to hope and change. Recommended for ages 10 and older.

"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
December 13, 2025 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
December 14, 2025 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

The book has been described as “an inspiring true story of Kermit Hill, an African American woman who broke barriers to create Tiny Tot School of St. Louis.”

Artists & Makers Studios, 11810 Parklawn Dr Suite 210, Rockville, MD 20852, USA

"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
December 19, 2025 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
December 21, 2025 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
December 26, 2025 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
December 28, 2025 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
"What Lies Beneath" at Gallery B
December 28, 2025 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
