Tuesday was the first day of school for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). MCM was at Northwest High School in Germantown as students, staff, and MCPS officials kicked off the new academic year.
There are new rules this school year, including changes to grading policy, cell phone policy, and student code of conduct. There is also an opt-out option for LGBTQ+ books in school curriculum, following a Supreme Court ruling this summer.
The school system is working to end a backlog of criminal background checks in the wake of a recent report from the county’s Office of the Inspector General.
While Tuesday was the official first day of school, Monday was the school system’s first-ever transition day for kindergartners, sixth graders and ninth graders, plus students attending a new school for the first time.
