The Washington Commanders have reached a $3.7 billion deal with the nation’s capital to build a new football stadium at the site of Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium — a development that will bring Commanders football back to the heart of Washington.
The new 65,000-seat stadium will include a state-of-the-art roof and will transform the area with housing, parks, recreation, hotels and restaurants, according to a Commanders press release. The stadium and surrounding amenities will cover nearly 180 acres.
“Right now, as our economy is shifting, [the stadium] is something our city really needs,” Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a Monday press conference. “We need growth, and we need jobs. We have 180 acres of opportunity on the banks of the Anacostia River.”
Construction of the stadium will create 14,000 jobs, along with 2,000 permanent jobs after construction is completed, according to the team.

“Today is a defining moment for the DMV and the Washington Commanders,” Commanders owner Josh Harris said in a written statement. “RFK stadium holds a legendary place in our history. It’s where the team dominated the NFL, capturing three Super Bowls and creating unforgettable memories for the fans.”
Harris added, “Now, we have the opportunity to honor that legacy by building a world class stadium, one that is also a once-in-a-generation catalyst for uplifting and transforming our region.”
The Commanders reached the NFC Championship Game for the first time in 33 years during the 2024-25 season behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The new stadium will be an important move as the franchise looks to enter the next era of Washington football.
Construction will begin next year and the stadium is expected to be completed in 2030, according to the team. The Commanders will continue to play at Northwest Stadium in Landover until construction is completed.
