Community Celebrates Juneteenth at Cabin John Park

Residents joined the Scotland community’s third annual Juneteenth festival Thursday at Cabin John Regional Park.

A parade in the afternoon featured dancers, bands, and floats. The entire festival spanned six days from June 14 until Thursday. It is said to be the largest Juneteenth celebration in the DMV.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people were declared free in Texas more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Scotland, a historic Black community in Potomac, launched the festival to raise funds for its historic church that was destroyed by flooding. The festival now also raises money to support other local organizations, particularly those benefiting underserved communities.
