Council Committee Advances Bill Favoring Displaced Federal Workers in County Hiring

The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee (GO) voted unanimously to approve three amendments to a bill that would give displaced federal workers preferential hiring for county jobs. The committee will now recommend Expedited Bill 10-25 to the full council.

At a June 12 worksession, GO committee members met with representatives from the Office of Human Resources (OHR) to review four proposed amendments to the legislation, all of which they approved.

The revised bill would grant displaced federal workers with preferential treatment after veterans and individuals with disabilities, as well as eliminate the requirement for applicants to demonstrate loss of income.

If the bill passes, applicants will need to prove residency in Montgomery County, as well as that their termination was based on a riff or because their position was no longer needed. They must also demonstrate that the displacement came on or after Jan. 1 and prior to application.

“We want to send a loud and clear message to our federal workers who have been let go,” said bill sponsor and Council Vice-President Will Jawando. “We value your services and we want to take advantage of them here in Montgomery County should the position be a good fit.”

More information about the bill can be found on the council’s website.
