Council plans hearings on bullying at Montgomery County Public Schools

An Odessa Shannon Middle School student faces another surgery tomorrow after being struck in the head by a metal object during gym class Oct. 22.

Lenny Diaz, a sixth grader, will have surgery to re-input part of his brain that was removed following the incident. He has been receiving physical therapy and wears a helmet to protect his skull.

After reading about the incident on MCM, Montgomery County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles spoke with councilmembers Will Jawando and Sidney Katz, and asked they look into bullying cases and how Montgomery County Public Schools handled them.

Jawando is chair of the Education and Culture Committee and Katz chairs the Public Safety Committee.

The plan is to have a joint committee hearing on bullying and truancy rates, and find out what repercussions MCPS uses, Sayles said. She expects the hearing to be scheduled sometime between January and March.

“We are seeing it at younger and younger levels. It’s kind of scary,” Sayles said about bullying.

Lenny Diaz’s mother, Emily Diaz, established a GoFundMe site that has raised $45,750 from 1,200 donations.

MCM requested to see the incident reports from the school district and the police. Both denied the requests, citing privacy issues and the fact the victim is a juvenile.
