Council Proposes Spending $4.8 Million for Security Cameras in County Garages

Montgomery County Council wants to spend almost $4.8 million to increase security at the Bethesda, Wheaton and Silver Spring county parking lots.

The proposal will be discussed Feb. 22 before the council’s Transportation and Environment and Government Operations and Fiscal Policy committee meetings.

The council intends to spend $2,008,000 at nine Bethesda county parking garages, $339,000 at three Wheaton garages and $2,418,000 at 10 Silver Spring garages.

The money, which will be taken out of current revenue in the general fund, will include installation of cameras in 22 parking lots “to address insufficient stairwell coverage, improve surveillance in areas that have restricted fields of view and provide enhanced video retention,” according to a council staff report.

County Executive Marc Elrich recommended this project to curb vandalism, theft, assaults and other criminal activity in county garages.

On Dec. 21, 2022, Charles Joseph Reynolds, 62, was shot dead in the stairwell of the Wayne Avenue parking garage in Downtown Silver Spring. No one has been arrested in the case.
