Council Unanimously Affirms Support for Transgender Community

Montgomery County Councilmembers voted to affirm and support the transgender community and condemn any acts against it during Tuesday’s meeting.

“This resolution sends a clear message that Montgomery County rejects all forms of hate and reaffirms the county’s commitment to acceptance and understanding,” said Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles, the lead sponsor.

The resolution states that “Montgomery County condemns all anti-transgender acts, urges all residents to exercise compassion and understanding and calls for neighboring jurisdictions to condemn hate and violence against the LGBTQ+ community.”

Councilmember Kristin Mink noted that the transgender community is “truly under attack,” pointing both to violence at recent drag queen story hours in the county and violence against its members throughout the country.

“It’s a very, very dangerous and scary time for many of our transgender and non-binary community members here and across the country,” she said, noting, “We have to be proactively part of the solution.”

Montgomery County Public Schools recently sent a letter to families that Mink described as “an affirmation and unequivocal statement of support for LGBTQ+ students and community members as well as an assurance that our curriculum does and will continue to include the LGBTQ+ community without apology or additional explanation.”

The resolution was part of a lengthy consent calendar, which was passed unanimously.
