County Jewish Students Plan ‘Bake Against Hate’ Sunday

Jewish students attending Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are hosting a bake sale Sunday as their way of “taking a stand against hate and violence.”

The bake sale runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the intersection of Woodmont and Bethesda Avenues in Bethesda.

All money raised will be contributed to The Jewish National Fund and support “critical initiatives such as providing psychological assistance to traumatized children, supplying essential medical equipment to injured civilians, and facilitating the safe evacuation of Israeli citizens from dangerous areas,” according to the students’ news release.

Participation is part of a national event Sunday for high schools following an attack on Israel by the terrorist group Hamas.

The students have reached out to legislators and school officials asking for baked goods.

The students are upset with Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight’s recent community message concerning the attack on Israel.

Several days after the attack, MCPS issued a community message stating, “Our heartfelt thoughts are with our students and their families, who may be experiencing the impact of the deeply disturbing and tragic violence in Israel and Gaza in a variety of ways.”

The Jewish Community Relations Council and ADL criticized the school’s statement, calling it a “weak, carefully worded statements that prioritized a perceived need for even-handedness over truth, authenticity, and compassion. Make no mistake, there are not two sides to this tragedy – there is no way to justify Hamas’ war crimes and unconscionable atrocities.”

“We call on Superintendent McKnight, the school board, and other officials to join us in baking against hate,” the students wrote.

“As leaders of the Jewish student organizations, we feel that it is our responsibility to support the needs of Jewish students across the county, something that MCPS’s central office has failed to do thus far,” the students wrote.

“We appreciate the support offered by our individual school administrations, many of whom will be present at the event, despite the central office’s lack of response. Our message is clear: Jewish students cannot be ignored. By coming together to bake against hate, we aim to bring the concerns of Jewish students to the forefront, urging our school officials to address them.”

To contribute baked goods, fill out this form. Desserts can be dropped off at 11:30 a.m.
