The General Assembly allocated $5 million for park improvements throughout Montgomery County, including $3 million for the proposed Wheaton Action Sports Park.
Wheaton Action Sports Park within Wheaton Regional Park is expected to include a skate park, bike skills track, climbing wall, adventure playground, picnic shelters, community track, bathrooms, overlook plaza, event seating and lighting. It will be part of the Rubini Athletic Complex.
Currently in the design phase, construction is expected to begin in 2027.
“In a very difficult budget year, the Montgomery County delegation showed its support for parks and came through with funding that will help us deliver and enhance several much-needed projects across the county,” said Miti Figueredo, Montgomery Parks director.
“These grants aren’t a substitute for county bonds, which fund most of our Capital Improvements Program, but in a year when we’ve been asked by the County Executive to cut $2 million for Wheaton Regional Park, we are very thankful for the additional funds,” Figueredo stated in a news release. “We are still hopeful that the county council will restore this $2 million cut so we can keep all our projects on track.”
The state also allocated $828,000 towards redevelopment at the New Hampshire Estates Neighborhood Park, which was impacted by all the Purple Line construction. This project includes accessibility improvements, a new playground, picnic shelter, urban plaza and other items.
Centerway Local Park in Gaithersburg was awarded $500,000 toward construction of a new skate park.
Dalewood Drive Neighborhood Park in Silver Spring was awarded $400,000 toward replacement of the existing playground.
Calverton Galway Local Park will receive $275,000 toward design and construction of a playground renovation project.
