Darnestown Man Arrested After Shooting at Police, Striking Officer’s Vehicle Twice

A Darnestown man was arrested after shooting at a Montgomery County Police officer early Tuesday morning.

Andrew S. Raymond, 42, is charged with first degree assault and related handgun offenses.

Police reported that an officer was patrolling the area of 700 block of East Gude Drive as a result of recent gun store burglaries nearby. At 12:30 a.m., Raymond allegedly ran toward the officer’s unmarked car and began shooting, hitting the unmarked car two times, police said in a news release.

Raymond, who is an employee of Engage Armament, was outside the store when police drove onto its parking lot. The officer saw a white male run towards the police vehicle while reaching into his waistband. The officer attempted to drive away when he heard gunshots, according to police.

The officer radioed for assistance and then saw the suspect running toward his vehicle. The officer activated his emergency equipment to signal that he was a police officer. Raymond stopped, dropped his weapon and raised his hands. He was then taken into custody, police said.
